kids...

Funny thing happened today.

I was standing in the kitchen and Jaxon walked in and said, "Mom, I was going to throw this ball at the chandelier, then my head told me not to." (that was before he beat me in 2 games of chutes and ladders!)

He was my ray of sunshine today in a storm of fevers and flu.

So, 2 kids and about 9 years of marriage ago, I had this pet peeve about people who let their sons wear those red cowboy boots out in public. I would wonder how that mom could let her son wear those out in public...put some cool sneakers on him. Let me stress that I thought that long ago...when I had only 1 child to dress and take to the store. I had lots of time to make sure her hair was done, her bows matched her socks that matched her outfit, her gloves and hat and scarf all matched her clean coat (yeah, I was probably a little overboard.) Now I have 3 kids. It takes 6x the time it took me to get just 1 child ready...I'm not sure why 3 kids=6(time), but, for some reason, that's what it ends up to be...anyway...the other day, I realized that I am now one of those mothers as I opened the door of the van and let my 4 year old daughter jump out dressed in her pink sparkly coat, black and blue JT hat, blue and white striped gloves, a pink shirt, tan pants, and red glitter dress shoes! (you've gotta choose your battles wisely!..and.. if you're in a hurry, you've gotta take what you can get!)

Disclaimer here: I still do want my kids to look nice. I really want their coats to be clean. I want their hats and gloves to match. I want their shoelaces white. I want their hair to be combed and faces washed. I want their clothes to fit and match. I want them to look like a million bucks....but it's not always possible. Sometimes I have to choose between my sanity and keeping them looking great. Sometimes, it just doesn't work. And, sometimes, Kennedy is just so proud of that ponytail she put in herself that I don't have the heart to do it over. So, the next time I see those red cowboy boots, I'll smile and look at that mom a lot differently.

We went through this stage too. Emma wanted to wear her princess dresses everywhere. For a while I let her and then I started noticing all the weird looks she was getting. You know, the "why doesn't your mom make you wear real clothes!" look. Now the only time she can wear them out is when we're going to Grandma and Bakka's!
