Like mother, like daughter

When I was in high school, I fell off the stage in the auditorium, right on my head. I was taken to the hospital by ambulance because of possible neck injury. Because this happened during the day, my mom was at work when she got the call. Before last week, I could only imagine what her 30 minute ride to the hospital felt like.

Now, I know exactly what it felt like.

Around 7:45 Wednesday evening, I got a call from the athletic trainer at Famous, where Ky has tumbling. I was told that Ky over-rotated on her full and landed on her head. She was knocked out, but was conscious at that moment. The trainer needed my permission to call the ambulance to take her to the ER.

So, I did what any normal person would do. I handed the phone to Jason and had her explain to him what had happened. (Sidenote here - I am all about managing the household. I'm usually pretty self-sufficient in a lot of areas. I can use power tools and bake wedding cakes. I can even fix a runny toilet. However, when it comes to injuries and my children, I let Jason take the reigns. He got a better grade in college anatomy & physiology than I did anyway.)

Within minutes, we were on our way to the hospital for the first time for one of our children, and every thought was going through my head. Not positive ones, either. They were more like, "What if she can't walk anymore? How are we going to get her around? Are we stupid for letting her tumble? Maybe we should've encouraged her to be into music or theater. Oh wait, that's why I fell off the stage. Ok, that's not really safe, either." On and on my thoughts went.

Then, I thought about how my mom must've felt on her way to the hospital.

I'm sorry, Mom. But, thanks.

Like me when I fell off the stage, Ky was okay. (Praise God!) When we heard what had happened from her mouth, we calmed down a bit. She didn't land right on her head. She fell back and hit her head really hard. I know it's not much better, but at least it's better than falling right on it. She was strapped on the board for hours, which I think caused her more pain than the injury itself.

Thankfully, she got back on the horse. She was able to get back on the mats this week and tumble and is now more determined than ever to get her full. Without over-rotating.
